Board Meeting - BIG NEWS
Written by Rich Robinson
Wednesday, 22 July 2009

Please note: Any comments posted can be read by all people. Expressing feelings is fine, but expect the administration to read what you write. (They're among our most loyal visitors.)

The meeting got underway at 4:30. Very early in the agenda was the public comment section. I spoke about the union's commitment to the levy effort, including both a financial element and our willingness to get "boots on the ground." I also talked about the difference between this negotiating session and the session in which we negotiated the current contract. The library has demonstrated a new willingness to hold dialog, which is a shift that could mark the beginning of a new relationship between the union and the library.

Joint Memo to Staff
Written by Rich Robinson
Thursday, 16 July 2009

Today, Executive Director Tim Kambitsch and I are releasing a joint memo to Library staff.  The memo is available by clicking on the icon below.

The memo describes efforts the Union and the Library are making to ensure the Library remains solvent in very difficult budgetary times.  As you read the memo, please note that the memo simply says that we are discussing possible solutions with the Library.  Because the budget is not yet set, no final decisions have been made.

The memo does discuss possible remedies to the mitigate budget shortfalls.  The only thing we've agreed to at this juncture is to discuss the possibility of these mitigating techniques.  There is no fait accompli.  We will resume negotiations with the Library next week with three objectives in mind:

  1. Keep the financially Library solvent, while
  2. Saving as many jobs as possible, and while
  3. Ensuring retained jobs are sufficient to support union members

The memo is below.

Clarification on MOU Vote
Written by Rich Robinson
Thursday, 16 July 2009

Yesterday, I sent out a notification that the vote at our next General Membership Meeting will be a vote to delay the negotiated pay raise.  I received feedback asking for clarification.  "Isn't that what we already voted on?" people asked.

The answer is both yes and no.  Our earlier vote passed an MOU that is worded such that it expires after the July 19th vote.  The vote on July 19th will be designed to extend the duration of the suspension so that we have more time to negotiate.  This was necessitated by politicians shirking their duty to pass a budget in a timely manner.  The delayed budget did not allow us to arrive at a negotiated solution before the previous issue expired.
