The library board met last night in an emergency board meeting. There were only two items on the agenda:
"1. Executive Director's Report - Information: The Executive Director will update the Board on the impact of reductions in state funding as proposed by Governor Strickland." and "2. Executive Session."
In the first part of the meeting, Tim Kambitsch covered the repercussions of the proposed spending cuts, including what might happen if the cuts happen and the levy fails (a worst-case scenario). Not a lot of new ground was covered; most of what Mr. Kambitsch covered has already been made public. A few interesting (and scary) tidbits include:
* The janitorial contract is coming up soon. There may be changes to that contract that will place more responsibility for cleaning on us, the staff, to save money on the contract.
* If the levy fails and the proposed cuts stand, our revenues may be as low as $12 million next year. Salaries are about $15 million.
* These numbers make it critical that the levy pass in some form. To increase the odds of the levy passing, the pollsters are recommending the library go for a smaller levy. But the smaller levy won't cover current operating costs, so even if the levy passes, we can expect more budget squeezes. (The pollsters will be at the July 15th board meeting to make their case.)
The Board moved into executive session, and what happened after that is known only to Mr. Kambitsch and the board members who were in attendance.
