Hello, my name is Lori Rotterman, and I'm a Steward from the Dayton
Metro Library Staff Association. It is in that role that I address you
today.
We've passed a major milestone in our organization's brief
history. Just over one year ago, we won the representation election,
and earned the right to represent this bargaining unit. Since then, we
have grown our organization into a fully-functioning labor union. We've
managed to provide those services to our members in an efficient
manner, and are actually reducing dues. This marks the first time since
collective bargaining agreements have been in place at the Dayton Metro
Library that union dues have gone down for our members. But this
message today is not just to toot our own horn. On the occasion of our
anniversary, we, the Union, want to take the opportunity to thank you,
the Library, for the times you've worked with us to solve problems for
our members and for the Library.
Our first year has been marked with many examples of effective
cooperation. We've worked together to overcome a massive increase in
health insurance premiums. We've worked together on individual cases,
trying to find effective solutions for a variety of issues around the
Library. Both sides stayed at the table long enough to arrive at a
final agreement on the contract.
We feel that these successes illustrate a promising pattern for
our future relationship. We look forward to working with you throughout
the next year, facing whatever challenges may arise and finding the
best solutions to benefit us all.
