Lori Rotterman, DMLSA Steward, also read a statement to the DML Board of Trustees at their April 9th meeting.
My name is Lori Rotterman, and I am speaking to you in my capacity as a Steward for the Dayton Metro Library Staff Association.
We want to inform you that we are looking forward to the negotiation process, and our Negotiating Team has been meeting to prepare for those negotiations. As you may know, Article 8 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement allows the six members of our team three hours of paid time per week for those preparations.
Four members of our team work at various branch locations. They have been informed that time spent traveling to the allowed three hour meetings will not be considered paid time. This means that those individuals must either take un-paid time off from their regular work schedule in order to travel to these preparatory meetings, or the length of the meeting becomes significantly less than the three hours allowed by contract.
Members of previous negotiating teams report that this represents a deviation from past practices when SEIU was in negotiations with the Library. The members of previous negotiating teams were allowed paid travel time in addition to the three hours paid time to attend meetings.
We are investigating legal options regarding our predecessor union receiving preferential treatment to what the current Staff Association is being shown. We sincerely hope this situation can be quickly resolved. We all want to move forward and work together toward a successful negotiation of our new contract.
Thank you for your time.
